IGI President Arun G. Rao was quoted in The Washington Post’s coverage of a recent U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit decision involving the use of filter teams in an article entitled, “Investigative tool used in law firm searches at risk, federal prosecutors fear.” An excerpt follows:

Arun Rao, another former federal prosecutor, said until the 4th Circuit decision, most federal investigators would have assumed the use of a filter team, authorized by a magistrate judge and following preapproved procedures, would survive a legal challenge.

“I suspect that this decision will burden magistrate judges,” he said, “substantially delay sensitive investigations, and significantly increase costs to the government.”

IGI President Arun G. Rao Quoted in The Washington Post Regarding U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision in United States v. Davis, Involving Constitutionality of Federal Criminal Statute 18 U.S.C. § 924(c)(3)(B)

IGI President Arun G. Rao was quoted in The Washington Post’s coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Davis, in an article entitled, “Divided Supreme Court strikes down gun law provision deemed unfair to violent criminals.”  An excerpt follows:

“Arun Rao, a former federal prosecutor in Maryland, said the ruling “deprives federal prosecutors of a valuable and frequently-used tool to combat violent crime.”

“Congress should now provide a legislative fix through a more carefully crafted statute that would allow prosecutors to continue to seek longer sentence for dangerous violent criminals while avoiding the vagueness that the Supreme Court’s majority criticized,” Rao said in an email.”

Gibson Dunn Partner Daniel Chung and IGI President Arun G. Rao Moderate Panel Discussion with Distinguished Asian-Pacific American Jurists

On Tuesday, June 18, 2019,  Gibson Dunn partner Daniel Chung and IGI President Arun G. Rao moderated a panel discussion with a group of distinguished Asian-Pacific American jurists, who provided their insights on diversity in the legal profession, their own paths in the law, and their experiences on the bench.  The panelists included the Honorable Neomi Rao and Sri Srinivasan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the Honorable Amit P. Mehta of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the Honorable Theodore D. Chuang of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, and the Honorable Maribeth Raffinan of the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.  The event, sponsored by APABA-DC, was held at the Washington, D.C. offices of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher.

Larry Potts, former FBI Deputy Director, rejoins IGI as Executive Vice President

Larry A. Potts has rejoined IGI as Executive Vice President. He will develop and lead IGI’s growing compliance practice, drawing on his expertise gained from nearly 15 years overseeing compliance and security for Scientific Games Corporation.

In his previous tenure with IGI, Potts served as Chief Operating Officer from 1997 to 2004, overseeing IGI’s operations and investigations across its offices around the world.  Potts originally joined IGI from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where he worked for 23 years, rising through the ranks to Deputy Director in 1995.

IGI President Arun G. Rao Quoted in Washington Post Regarding Manafort’s Indictment by New York County District Attorney’s Office

On March 13, 2019, IGI President Arun G. Rao was quoted in The Washington Post article, “Manafort indicted in New York state, charges that fall outside Trump’s pardon power.”

Rao, a former federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice and assistant district attorney in Manhattan, said, “In the event Mr. Manafort ultimately evades federal justice by virtue of a politically expedient pardon, he may still be held accountable for violations of New York state law.”

On December 18, 2018, IGI President Arun G. Rao was quoted in the Associated Press article, “Judge delays Flynn sentencing, ‘not hiding disgust’ at crime.”

Rao, a former federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice, said Flynn’s defense memo was “striking because it’s ‘inconsistent’ with Flynn’s cooperative stance so far,” and noted the possibility that “in this very unusual situation” it could be “a play for a pardon.”

IGI PRESIDENT ARUN G. RAO INTERVIEWED ON CBC NEWS NETWORK REGARDING FLYNN’S SENTENCING DELAY

On December 18, 2018, the President of IGI, Arun G. Rao, was interviewed by CBC News Network’s Andrew Nichols with respect to Michael Flynn’s sentencing delay and its potential impact to the Mueller investigation.

When asked for his reaction to U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan’s decision to delay sentencing until 2019, Rao said, “Judge Sullivan, who is known for being exceptionally independent-minded, was strongly suggesting the defendant, Mr. Flynn, may end up serving some jail time today, and that he should consider requesting a delay in sentencing if there was additional cooperation to be conducted that might result in additional reduction to the sentence.”
